Program
Kintsugi Lecture and Demonstration
A Kintsugi artisan from Portland will provide a lecture and live demonstration exploring the history, philosophy, and techniques of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold.
Please note that due to time limitations, this event is a lecture and demonstration only and will not include a hands-on workshop.
Fellowship Luncheon & 55th Anniversary Celebration
Following the lecture, participants will carpool to President Shimizu’s residence, located less than five minutes from BCA.
A luncheon will be served, followed by a special celebration marking the 55th anniversary of Tankokai. While a tea service will not be offered, guests will enjoy cake from a local bakery.
During the celebration, we will recognize and honor members who have contributed to the growth and success of Tankokai over the years. We hope you will join us in expressing our appreciation for their dedication and service.

| 【漆に関する注意事項】 金継ぎで使用する漆は、未硬化の状態では、かぶれなどのアレルギー反応を引き起こすことがあります。また、実演では可燃性の溶剤であるテレビン油（テレピン油）を使用いたします。漆やテレビン油に敏感な方は、その蒸気により皮膚の刺激や体調不良を感じる場合がありますので、ご自身の体調やアレルギー歴をご考慮のうえ、ご参加くださいますようお願いいたします。 実演では、生漆を塗布した後に講義を行い、その後、まだ硬化していない漆の表面に金粉を蒔く工程をご覧いただきます。 なお、漆は完全に硬化すると（通常は数か月程度）、安全に触れたり、食器として使用したりすることができます。 漆アレルギーなどの理由で午前の講義への参加が難しい方は、事前にイベントアクティビティ委員会までお知らせください。午後の親睦ランチ会からご参加いただけますので、どうぞご遠慮なくお申し出ください。 お食事はカジュアルなバフェスタイルでご用意いたします。アレルギーに対応していないお料理が含まれる場合がございますので、あらかじめご了承ください。 イベント経費の大部分を昼食会が占めておりますため、午後の親睦ランチ会からご参加の場合も、参加費は40ドルとさせていただきます。ご理解のほど、よろしくお願いいたします。 |
Important Safety Information Regarding Kintsugi Materials (Urushi Lacquer)
When raw, urushi lacquer is toxic and can cause allergic reactions, including skin rashes, upon contact. Turpentine, a flammable solvent, is also used during the demonstration. Individuals who are highly sensitive to urushi or turpentine may experience skin irritation or feel unwell from exposure to the fumes.
At the beginning of the demonstration, raw urushi lacquer will be applied and allowed to cure during the lecture. Gold powder will then be gently dusted onto the tacky lacquer. Although raw urushi can cause allergic reactions, once it has fully cured—typically after a couple of months—it becomes completely safe to touch and is suitable for use with food.
Members who are unable to attend the Kintsugi session because of urushi lacquer allergies or other sensitivities are welcome to join us for the afternoon luncheon only. If this applies to you, please notify the Membership Activities Committee in advance. The meal will be served in a casual, buffet-style setting. Please note that some dishes may not be prepared to accommodate specific food allergies. We appreciate your understanding. The registration fee is $40 regardless of whether you attend both the Kintsugi session and luncheon or the luncheon only, as the luncheon accounts for the majority of the event costs. |
